Fast on ice.

The origin of marathon speed skating lies in skating long distances on natural ice, of which the Elfstedentocht is the most famous example. Due to the lack of natural ice in the 1970s, more and more competitions were held on artificial ice rinks. Gradually a competition cycle emerged which in recent years has grown into a national Marathon Cup.

On natural ice, Grand Prix races are organized in Austria (Weissensee), Sweden and Finland. And if it is freezing of course also in the Netherlands, in this instance Burgum!
